Current Distros - Announcements

Slackware Interactive Boot Scripts IBS v12.0.0-6 get IBS here . This release brings slakbootIBS start-up scripts in sync with recent changes and additions in Slackware 12.0 current.

Current LinuxTheTools v0.7.7-4, text mode shell level administrator tools available for download here.

Compact Flash Embedded Slackware v1.3.6-1 (Ready-to Burn) SDK updated, available for download here.

Note: EBS v1.3.6-1 i486 (full set of 9 archives) is posted at our ftp site. This new release includes new kernels and 240x320 LCD touchscreen support.

Bandwidth Problems? downloading these 3 smaller archives directly from our ftp site: base, i486a1 and i486a2, is equivalent to getting the combined slakbootEBS-base+i486a archive.

README for slakbootEBS-current

If not using the EBS SDK and only downloading the premade v1.3.3 images, which can be installed with either burnit or dd, you will need both the boot and rootfs images. Note that the current SDK will generate new v1.3.6 images.

When installing EBS from distribution archives, make sure you run install.sh, because some files in the build directories might not have been extracted with the right permissions, for example slaketcs/i486/dev/*.

If you are downloading one of the embedded distribution Compact Flash Ready images, you will probably want mntfimg and probably the burnit utility to install to Compact Flash.

VMiX-x86 is a multiuser and multitasking operating system that resides on top of DOS. There are currently two supported versions of VMiX. Classic VMiX-386 (VMiX Version 2 tree) has a protected mode kernel embedded inside its executable. VMiX was created in the mid-80's and is still being used today. A new architecture (VMiX Version 3 tree) is being actively developed. The new VMiX 3 uses our new protected mode BABy Microkernel, but is still at the experimental stage, while the built-in protected mode debugger is completed.

There are now final VMiX releases in a combined bootable 1.44 floppy disk image that starts X-DOS and boots the BABy Microkernel and the VMiX v3.0.12-1 user runtime environment. The latest and more robust VMiX v2.9.9-1, which includes the microkernel & runtime in a single executable is also included, as an alternative.

VMiX DOS compatibility: VMiX is most reliable when running on top of MSDOS 5.0, 6.0 or 6.2, DRDOS 5.0 or 6.0 and XDOS 5.0

Announcing the 16th release of the Embedded Slackware Development System.
    Available at the Download Section!

Version 1.3.6-1 is the first release in this series.

SlakbootEBS is a binary rootfs distribution of directories and Linux files (with a Slackware flavor) arranged as multiple architecture dependent component trees and a set of build tools.

Currently, the uClibc and glibc i486 versions boot and run, with no known major problems, at our customer test sites, on Soekris and Advantech boards. The Arm version can be mounted as a Compact Flash and then chroot to it, on a Sharp Zaurus type PDA's

Because of size of the FULL distribution, the sdk is divided into 1 base archive plus 8 archives for EACH supported architecture (i486, pxa255, uclibc_i486 and uclibc_pxa255). For each architecture, there are 4 base archives (a, b, c and d). In addition, there are currrently 4 add-on archives (Gcc Devel, Pixil PDA, Opie PDA and the Wine compatibility layer for Windows apps).

To start creating your first SlakbootEBS compact flash, you need only to download the slakbootEBS-1.3.6-base+i486a 12MB archive and have FUN burning a Tiny system with the makeCF-Tiny script. However, to do a complete and usefull 128MB Text Mode Compact Flash, you WILL NEED the slakbootEBS-1.3.6-i486b and slakbootEBS-1.3.6-i486c archives. To add an X-Server and graphics apps, you will also need the slakbootEBS-1.3.6-i486d archive.

The makeCF utility is an easy to use frontend to burnit, which is the automatic filesystem creator and bootstrapping utility. It allows CF creation parametters to be easily selected and applied, while automaically creating and burning the final image.

The Embedded SDK is intended to give an easy start for the design and creation of root filesystems with a Slackware flavor.

New version 12.0.0 of the Interactive Boot Scripts for Slackware released! Brings several boot scripts in sync with additions and changes introduced in Slackware-Current.

Configuration script rc.IBSconf provides support to set the Ethernet Device speed, duplex mode and autonegotiate configuration. Additionally, supports MAC address spoofing, so that you will be able to connect to your Internet broadband provider with different ethernet cards using the desired MAC address.

A QUIETBOOT option was added to /etc/rc.d/rc.IBSconf. The option allows you to suppress all screen MSGS, starting at rc.S or at rc.M script execution. Support for ALSA sound, devfs, sysfs, udev and LVM's. Additional support for 2.6.x kernels. Updated firewalls. The default boot firewall state was changed from cleared to active. Firewall is auto started for PPP and DSL connections and now also for the local network. More smarts added to the install.sh program. Improved the hboot (hard-reboot or shutdown) script. Minor bug fixes. Expanded documentation and man pages.

IBS uses a single configuration file, /etc/rc.d/rc.IBSconf You must run install.sh program, after installpkg, this makes a backup and then modifies your current Slackware boot scripts. IBSCONFIG checklist provided for a quick start.

A four level layered architecture for SPAM filtering was added to the firewalls. The number of ethernet cards supported was increased to 3 plus 1 wireless.

Distribution contains replacement Slackware boot scripts and a set of control & dispatching tools for booting with colorized interactive scripts. The new boot process allows the operator to select or skip start-up components during installation. It facilitates debuging of startup problems and allows operators to maintain a common baseline to support multiple local configurations or support multiple servers with a single set of scripts.

    Slackware 12.0 released

Announcement: The First Slackware release since 2006, Slackware Linux 12.0 continues the long Slackware tradition of simplicity, stability, and security. Among the many program updates and distribution enhancements, you'll find two of the most advanced desktop environments available today: Xfce 4.4.1, a fast and lightweight but visually appealing and easy to use desktop environment, and KDE 3.5.7, the latest version of the award-winning K Desktop Environment.

Slackware uses the 2.6.21 kernel bringing you advanced performance features such as the ReiserFS journaling filesystem, SCSI and ATA RAID volume support, SATA support, and kernel support for X DRI (the Direct Rendering Interface) that brings high-speed hardware accelerated 3D graphics to Linux. Additional kernels allow installing Slackware using any of the journaling filesystems available for Linux, including ext3, ReiserFS, IBM's JFS, and SGI's XFS. For those Slackware users who are anxious to try the new 2.6.x kernel series, it is fully supported by the system. A precompiled Linux 2.6.21.5 kernel, modules, and source code are provided (along with complete instructions on how to install the new kernel).

From the beginning, Slackware has offered a stable and secure Linux distribution for UNIX veterans as well as an easy-to-use system for beginners. Slackware includes everything you'll need to run a powerful server or workstation. Each Slackware package follows the setup and installation instructions from its author(s) as closely as possible, offering you the most stable and easily expandable setup.

Here are some of the advanced features of Slackware 12.0:

    • System binaries are linked with the GNU C Library, version 2.5. This version of glibc also has excellent compatibility with existing binaries.
    • X11R7 Xorg server v1.3 This is the current release of the X.Org Foundation's X Window System. The 1.3.0 version is a new release that includes additional hardware support, functional enhancements and bug fixes. Font rendering is improved yet again with recent versions of fontconfig and freetype. Through the generosity of Bitstream, Inc., the Vera truetype font family is included as well providing pleasing default fonts out of the box.
    • Support for fully encrypted network connections with OpenSSL, OpenSSH, and GnuPG.
    • Apache 2.2.4 web server with Dynamic Shared Object (DSO) support, SSL, and PHP.
    • Web browsers galore! Includes KDE's Konqueror 3.5.7, Mozilla Seamonkey 1.1.2, and the immensely popular new Firefox 1.5.0.7 (as well as the Thunderbird email and news client with advanced junk mail filtering).
    • Large repository of extra software packages compiled and ready to run. This includes various window managers, support for 3Dfx gaming cards, Qt Motif-3.3.6, the K3b CD burning application for KDE, the Java(TM) 2 Software Development Kit Standard Edition, libsafe (advanced buffer overflow protection for additional security), ISDN support, additional 802.11 drivers, and much more (see the /extra directory).
    • Another Slackware exclusive: Slackware's ZipSlack installation option is the fastest, _easiest_ Linux installation ever. ZipSlack provides a basic text-based Linux system as a 48 megabyte ZIP archive. Simply unzip on any FAT or FAT32 partition, edit your boot partition in the LINUX.BAT batch file, and you can be running Linux in less than five minutes. The ZipSlack installation includes everything you need to network with Linux (including Ethernet, token ring, and PPP), and extend the system with additional software packages such as X. A ZipSlack system will even fit on a Zip(TM) disk, so you can carry a personal Linux system with you to run on any PC with a Zip(TM) drive.
    Downloading Slackware 12.0:
    ---------------------------

The full version of Slackware Linux 12.0 is available for download from the central Slackware FTP site hosted by our friends at www.cwo.com:

BABy (Basic Abstraction Block) is a 50Kb IA-32 microkernel. This PMode microkernel for DOS manages the x86 hardware interaction in a manner similar to Windows' HAL. BABy exports an extensive API via INT's 15h, 2Fh, and 31h.

The API provides services in 5 categories: I/O control, PMode domains, PMode services, Memory management and Virtual 86 mode. BABy can be used to provide PMode services to our shareware multiuser O/S, VMiX x86.

DPMS services via BAB services are not yet complete.
Distribution includes binaries, sources, makefiles, samples and API docs.

In the new design, VMiX has been split into two main components. The system layer is managed by BABy (Basic Abstraction Block). This subsystem manages the hardware interaction in a manner similar to Windows' HAL. The BABy microkernel exports an API that can be used by other O/S's, as well. The second component is the VMiX O/S layer, it manages text and graphical processes and services.

      News: linuxTheTools-0.7.7-4 UPGRADED - 12/01/07

New version of our Linux Administrator tools (LTT) . Fixes bugs in the bakepkg utilities and updates the more than 50 utilities. The ftpwatch and fs file size utility were redesigned and upgraded with new options. New application shell2c, converts and compiles a shell script into a binary executable. Several bug fixes to the distribution archive producing utilities bakepkg, buildpkg and postpkg. Upgraded our application cloaking utility which hides the real process name from the Linux process tables and instead exposes a user selected fake name.

Release adds fixes & enhancements to the ddiff, emit, mntfimg, list, fs, and nfiles utilities. The 'list' any-arch utility adds support for both tar and ar compressed .ipk archives and fixes a .tar.bz2 bug. mntfimg can now also mount and umount cramfs and jffs2 file systems, as well as ext2 and fat32. Several options added to ddiff and now can compare only coexisting dirs or files on both trees.

Our console screen rendering tool, /bin/emit, has been totally upgraded. Greatly improved the emitdemo script, which can used as an example of how to write your own emit driven scripts. Emit has been tested with a normal 80x25 Linux text mode tty screen running bash, ash or zsh. It also can be used in graphics mode, in an xterm, rxvt or eterm shell window.

To allow implementing PPP dial-in support at your servers, a ready made mgetty v1.1.30 and working sample configuration files are included in this release.

Includes our banner advertisements redirector, that works in cunjunction with your local Apache http server to by-pass ad load times. This CGI script just routes adserver page requests to your local http server, which just nulls out the banner ad URL. Includes an Internet crawler for harvesting URL links, a new ftpwatch local or remote server monitoring utility and upgrades our handy loop device utility for mounting and accessing files containing file system images.

startX, will work correctly on non-Slackware Linux distros. Fixes minor bugs in other utilities. Continued enhancements and updates to the iptables and ipchains firewalls. Expanded documentation and man pages, updated firewalls. This release brings the total essential administrator tools included in a single distribution to more than 50 shell utilities.

Eventhough, TheTools will operate with many Linux distros including RedHat, SuSE, Debian and Mandrake, they are a complementary package to our current slakbootIBS boot scripts for Slackware 7 - 12.
